As many of you know, I'm lucky to be able to do both things that I love: graphic design and photography. As an active member of the AIGA I look for ways to contribute to the greater design community. Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of photographing Greg Christman's Icon Workshop at the AIGA SPACE in Philadelphia.
Greg was going for a really hands-on practical workshop where designers would get a chance to work through their own inspired icon sets under his expert guidance.
Simplicity is key to icon design. Greg spoke at length on his methodology for determining the forms his icons will take.
Sharpie, pencil, paper, and laptops... That about sums up the tools of the trade today! Designers don't always have to take to their computers first thing, sometimes it's best to let your doodles be your guide.
Just a few of Greg's stylized illustrations. He really keeps his symbols crisp with solid lines and simple shapes. Personally, I love the squiggle clouds/atmosphere in these icons. They remind me of mid-century shapes and patterns.
Taking the process to the computer, he explains how he goes about creating shapes effortlessly in Illustrator, while zooming in and out, critiquing his work as it evolves.
You can tell these tips had everyone thinking critically about their design processes.
Colorful icons start to emerge from those imaginative minds.
Did I mention there was pizza?!?!?!
Once the sketches and illustrations started to take shape, Greg offered some tips and one-on-one evaluation.
Nick was a great host, chatting with all the attendees and making sure everyone had plenty of pizza.
You can start to see each designer's style coming through as the unique illustrations take shape.
I think we all started to get silly toward the end. The workshop was a great success.
Greg was nice enough to pose with his awesome letterpress business card for some "press shots" after the workshop. It's one talent to do great work and another to teach it. Thanks to Greg Christman a lucky bunch of designers walked away with some new tools and talents! Thanks to Greg for being our guest and also to Nick, Diane, Helene, Robb, Lisa, Nicole, Ryan, and everyone in AIGA that helped put on/promote this fun event!!
